CHAPTER 48

AREA 2

1998-1999

 

Section 1. Authority. These rules are promulgated by authority of Wyoming Statutes 23-1-302, 23-2-206, 23-3-201, and 23-3-202.

Section 2. General Fishing Rules. The provisions of General Fishing Rules (Chapter 46) apply except as specified below.

Section 3. Coverage. Area 2 includes the Wind River, Big Horn River, Shoshone River, Clark's Fork and Yellowstone River Drainages. (See Area 5, Chapter 51, for Sweetwater River Drainage.)

Section 4. Seasons. Fishing is permitted in Area 2 during the entire calendar year except as specified differently below:

(a) All lakes, streams and ponds within the drainage of Buffalo Creek (Copper Mountain area) within Hot Springs County, are closed to fishing September 1 through April 30.

(b) Jakey's Fork is closed from the confluence with the Wind River upstream to the upper boundary of the Dubois Fish Hatchery from October 1 through May 31.

(c) North Fork of the Shoshone River Drainage from Gibbs Bridge upstream to Newton Creek (inclusive) is closed to fishing from April 1 through June 30.

(d) Sand Mesa Reservoirs #1 and #2 in Fremont County are closed to fishing from March 1 through May 31.

(e) Shoshone Lake and Shoshone Creek in Fremont County are closed to fishing from September 1 through May 31.

(f) Torrey Creek Drainage above Ross Lake and that portion of Ross Lake south of P.J. Island are closed from January 1 through July 14.

(g) Torrey Creek proper from Torrey Lake up to the forest boundary will be closed from April 1 through May 31.

(h) Washakie Creek proper above Little Washakie Lake, Washakie Lake proper within 50 feet of the outlet and all the inlets, and all tributaries to the lake will be closed from January 1 through July 31.

(i) Buffalo Bill Reservoir, Park County, that portion lying west of a straight line connecting the mouths of Rattlesnake Creek and Sheep Creek (commonly known as Spring Creek) up the drainage to Gibbs Bridge is closed to fishing from April 1 through July 14.

(j) The following water is closed all year:

(1) The "Rise" of the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River downstream to the bridge on the Sinks Canyon Road.

Section 5. Creel Limits, Length Limits, Tackle Restrictions on Specific Waters. The statewide creel limits (Chapter 46, Section 5) and legal fishing methods apply in Area 2 except as specified differently below:

(a) Big Horn Lake, Big Horn County. Daily creel and possession limits are as follows:

(1) Trout and salmon - 10 fish.

(2) Bass, walleye, and sauger - 6 in combination.

(3) Channel catfish - 6.

(4) Other game species - no limit.

(b) Big Horn River from Wedding of the Waters downstream to the Black Mountain Road Bridge (County Road 15-172). The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 18 inches.

(c) Boysen Reservoir. The limit on burbot shall be three per day or in possession.

(d) Buffalo Bill Reservoir, excluding South Fork and Diamond Creek Dike Ponds. The limit on trout shall be four per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 20 inches.

(e) Lake Cameahwait (Bass Lake). The limit on largemouth bass shall be two per day or in possession. All bass between 10 and 15 inches must be returned to the water immediately. Only one bass may exceed 15 inches.

(f) Christina Lake, Fremont County. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession; only one may exceed 20 inches; only two may be lake trout.

(g) Clark's Fork River from the National Forest Boundary upstream to Reef Creek. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 12 inches.

(h) Clark's Fork River from Reef Creek upstream to theWyoming/Montana Stateline. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession. All trout over 8 inches must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(i) Cow Lake. The limit on trout shall be two per day or in possession. Only 1 trout may exceed 16 inches.

(j) East Fork of the Wind River Drainage (including Bear Creek and Wiggins Fork) from the confluence with the Wind River upstream to the National Forest boundary. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession. No more than two of these fish may be cutthroat trout and provided further only one trout may exceed 15 inches. All cutthroat trout between 11 and 15 inches must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(k) East Fork of the Wind River Drainage (including Bear Creek and Wiggins Fork) upstream from the National Forest boundary (excluding Bog Lake). The limit on trout shall be six fish per day or in possession. No more than two of these fish may be cutthroat trout. Only one may exceed 20 inches.

(l) East Newton Lake, Park County. The limit on trout shall be one per day or in possession. All trout less than 20 inches must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(m) Fish Lake, Fremont County. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession.

(n) Grace Lake, Big Horn County. The limit on all trout shall be two per day or in possession. All trout (including brook trout) less than 10 inches must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(o) Gustave Lake, Fremont County. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 20 inches; only two may be lake trout.

(p) Little Moose Lake, Park County. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 16 inches. All trout between 10 and 16 inches (inclusive) must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(q) Luce Reservoir, Park County. All trout must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(r) Middle Depression Reservoir, Fremont County. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 15 inches.

(s) North Fork Shoshone River Drainage (excluding Buffalo Bill Reservoir). The limit on trout shall be three per day, or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 20 inches.

(t) Ocean Lake. The limit on burbot shall be three per day or in possession.

(u) Pelham Lake, Fremont County. The limit on trout shall be two per day or in possession; all trout less than 14 inches must be released; fishing with artificial flies or lures only.

(v) Renner Reservoir. The limit on largemouth bass shall be six per day or in possession. Only two bass may be between 10 and 15 inches. Only one bass may exceed 15 inches.

(w) Shoshone Creek and Shoshone Lake. The limit on trout shall be two trout per day or in possession.

(x) Swamp Lake, Park County. The limit on all trout (including brook trout) shall be two per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 12 inches. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(y) Yellowstone River Drainage upstream from the Yellowstone National Park Boundary. The limit on trout shall be two fish per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 20 inches.

Section 6. Special Winter Ice Fishing Regulation. There shall be a special winter ice fishing regulation (Chapter 46, Section 2B) during the ice covered period on the following waters:

(1) Big Horn Lake in Big Horn County.

(2) Boysen Reservoir in Fremont County.

(3) Ocean Lake in Fremont County.

(4) Pilot Butte Reservoir in Fremont County.

(5) Wardell Reservoir in Big Horn County.

Section 7. Live Bait Fish. The use or possession of live bait fish in Area 2 is prohibited except as specified below:

(a) Fathead minnows are the only live bait fish species which may be used in Torrey, Ring and Trail lakes in the Torrey Creek Drainage provided said fish are taken from the Wind River Drainage upstream from the western boundary of the Wind River Indian Reservation or obtained from a licensed bait dealer authorized to sell fish for use in these waters.

(b) Live bait fish may be used in Wardell Reservoir, Big Horn Lake, Big Horn River and, Wind River downstream from Boysen Reservoir, Boysen Reservoir, Ocean Lake, Pilot Butte Reservoir, and Five Mile Creek (tributary to Boysen) provided said fish are obtained from a licensed bait dealer authorized to sell bait fish for use in these waters or taken only from the following locations:

(1) Badwater Creek Drainage.

(2) Big Horn River Drainage downstream from the Wind River Indian Reservation.

(3) Popo Agie River Drainage below Wyoming Highway 287.

(4) Wind River Drainage within the LeClair, Riverton and Midvale Irrigation districts.

Section 8. Spear Gun Fishing. Underwater spear gun fishing is permitted in Big Horn Lake, Boysen Reservoir, Buffalo Bill Reservoir and Ocean Lake from June 1 through August 31. The limit on walleye in Area 2 shall be 2 fish per day or in possession. All other general and specific water creel limits apply.
