CHAPTER 47

AREA 1

1998-1999

Section 1. Authority. These rules are promulgated by authority of Wyoming Statutes, 22-1-302, 23-3-201, 23-3-202.

Section 2. General Fishing Rules. The provisions of General Fishing Rules (Chapter 46) apply except as specified below.

Section 3. Coverage. Area 1 includes the Snake River, Salt River, Greys River, Hoback River, Gros Ventre River and Buffalo Fork River drainages and all drainages west of the Teton and Snake River Ranges.

Section 4. Seasons. Fishing is permitted in Area 1 during the entire calendar year except as specified differently below:

(a) The following waters are closed from November 1 through March 31:

(1) Snake River proper upstream from Palisades Reservoir to Yellowstone National Park is closed to trout fishing (see Section 9 whitefish season).

(2) Snake River tributary streams from the Snake River bridge at Hoback Junction, excluding Hoback River, downstream to Palisades Reservoir.

(3) Waters on the west slope of the Teton and Snake River ranges, excluding Grassy Lake Reservoir.

(4) Elk Park Pond and Flat Creek between the west boundary of the National Elk Refuge and U.S. Highway 191 bridge adjacent to the Sagebrush Motel (see Section 6 age restrictions).

(b) The following waters are closed from November 1 through May 20:

(1) Snake River tributary streams from Yellowstone National Park to the Snake River bridge at Hoback Junction.

(2) Soda Lake in the Gros Ventre River Drainage.

(3) All waters in the Teton and Gros Ventre wilderness areas.

(c) The following waters are closed from November 1 through July 31:

(1) Blacktail Spring Creek, Cottonwood Creek (except from Jenny Lake downstream to Saddle Horse Concession Bridge), and Upper Bar BC Spring Creek in Grand Teton National Park.

(2) Lower Bar BC Spring Creek.

(3) Flat Creek between the Old Crawford bridge site (as posted) and McBride bridge and Nowlin Creek (from its mouth to the "closed area" signs 1/4 mile upstream) on the National Elk Refuge.

(d) Jackson Lake is closed to fishing from October 1 through October 31.

(e) Salt River Drainage above the Upper Narrows bridge (Wyoming Highway 238) is closed to trout fishing from November 1 through December 31 (see Section 9 whitefish season).

(f) The following waters are closed all year:

(1) Flat Creek Drainage from the Old Crawford Bridge site downstream to the National Elk Refuge boundary fence (US Highway 26/89) and Nowlin Creek above "Closed Area" signs.

(2) Snake River for a distance of 150 feet below the downstream face of Jackson Lake Dam, Cottonwood Creek from the outlet of Jenny Lake downstream to Saddle Horse Concession Bridge, Christian Ponds, Hedrick's Pond, Moose Pond, Sawmill Pond and Swan Lake, all within Grand Teton National Park.

Section 5. Creel Limits, Length Limits, Tackle Restrictions on Specific Waters. The general creel limits (Chapter 46, Section 5) and legal fishing methods apply in Area 1 except as specified differently below:

(a) Greys River proper from the Murphy Creek bridge upstream to Corral Creek. The limit on cutthroat trout shall be two per day or in possession. Only one cutthroat trout may exceed 16 inches. All cutthroat trout between 11 and 16 inches (inclusive) must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(b) Salt River from Thayne Lane (County Road 125) upstream to the Highway 89 bridge at the Silverstream Lodge. The limit on trout shall be four per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 18 inches. All trout between 11 and 18 inches (inclusive) must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(c) Snake River proper from Yellowstone National Park boundary to Jackson Lake. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one may exceed 20 inches.

(d) Snake River proper from 150 feet below Jackson Lake dam to the gauging station 1000 feet below Jackson Lake dam. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one may exceed 20 inches. The use or possession of fish, parts thereof, or fish eggs for bait is prohibited. (see Grand Teton National Park regulations).

(e) Snake River proper from 1,000 feet below Jackson Lake dam (at gauging station) to the Highway 22 bridge (Wilson bridge). The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one may exceed 18 inches. All trout between 12 and 18 inches (inclusive) must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(f) Snake River proper from the Highway 22 bridge (Wilson bridge) to West Table boat ramp and Buffalo Fork River downstream of the wilderness boundary. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one may exceed 12 inches.

(g) Pacific Creek downstream of the wilderness boundary. The limit on trout shall be three per day or in possession. Only one may exceed 12 inches. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(h) Flat Creek on the National Elk Refuge between Mcbride bridge and the Old Crawford bridge site, Nowlin Creek on the National Elk Refuge from its mouth to the "closed area" signs 1/4 mile upstream. The limit on cutthroat trout shall be one per day or in possession. All trout less than 20 inches in length must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies only.

(i) Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake and Leigh Lake. The limit on trout shall be six per day or in possession. Only one trout may exceed 24 inches.

(j) Soda Lake in the Gros Ventre River Drainage. The limit on trout shall be one per day or in possession. All trout less than 20 inches in length must be returned to the water immediately. Fishing is permitted by the use of artificial flies and lures only.

(k) Wilderness Areas in Area 1. The limit on trout shall be two per day or in possession in designated wilderness areas in Area 1 (limit of ten additional brook trout 8 inches or less applies).

Section 6. Age Restrictions on Certain Waters.

(a) It shall be unlawful for persons 14 years of age and older to fish in the following waters.

(1) Elk Park Pond.

(2) Flat Creek between the west boundary of the National Elk Refuge and U.S. Highway 191 bridge adjacent to the Sagebrush Motel.

Section 7. Live Bait Fish. The use or possession of live bait fish in Area 1 is prohibited except that licensed bait dealers may hold live bait fish until the time of sale. Holders of valid seining licenses may seine or trap bait fish for use as dead bait in the Snake River Drainage excluding the waters within the national park. Any bait fish captured except those to be held by licensed bait dealers must be killed immediately.

Section 8. Spear Gun Fishing. Underwater spear gun fishing is permitted for the taking of nongame fish and whitefish only during the regular fishing season on all the waters in Area 1 excluding Grand Teton National Park.

Section 9. Whitefish Season. The Snake River proper is closed from March 1 through March 31 for whitefish fishing. The Salt River drainage is open year-round for whitefish fishing.

Section 10. Palisades Reservoir. The boundaries of Palisades Reservoir shall be Sheep Gulch boat ramp on the Snake River arm; the Greys River bridge just above Mill Creek on the Greys River arm; and McCoy Creek bridge on the Salt River arm.

Section 11. Grand Teton National Park.

(a) Fishing is permitted in Grand Teton National Park in conformance with laws and regulations of the State of Wyoming and the regulations of the National Park Service.

(b) The use or possession of fish, fish eggs (real or artificial) or fish parts for bait is prohibited in all waters within Grand Teton National Park, except it shall be permissible to possess or use the following dead, nongame fish on or along the shores of Jackson Lake: redside shiner, speckled dace, longnose dace, Paiute sculpin, mottled sculpin, Utah chub, Utah sucker, bluehead sucker and mountain sucker. (Refer to Grand Teton National Park Regulations).
