Trip Itinerary

March 9 Sunday This morning you arrive to Ezeiza International airport on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentina.  You will be met outside of customs and transferred to the domestic airport of Aeroparque for your flight to Bariloche. This flight is approximately 2 hours & you will arrive in the afternoon to Bariloche where you will be met by the guides of Esquel Outfitters & transferred to the Hosteria El Trebol in Cholila. Travel time to Cholila is 2 ˝ hours.  Your scenic drive will wind through the foothills of the Andes & allow you a stop in the town of El Bolson for a taste of delicious Argentine ice cream.  Upon arrival at El Trebol, relax and prepare for your first day of fishing in Patagonia on Monday morning.

Fly fishing in the CordilleraMarch 10 Monday Today you will float the Beautiful Rio Rivadavia in Los Alerces National Park.  Your fishing day begins with breakfast at the lodge at 7:30AM. The morning drive to the river takes you into the park, perhaps one of most scenic in this region of Patagonia. You will have an opportunity to fish for rainbows, browns and perhaps an occasional land locked salmon on these crystal clear waters flowing though lush forests of southern beech. This evening you will return to the comfort of el Trebol lodge.

March 11 Tuesday Your second day of fishing in Patagonia will take you further into the National Park to float fish the Rio Frey. This river is accessed by taking a motor boat across two lakes into the heart of the park.  You fish this day surrounded by glacial covered mountains and just the company of your party members.

March 12 Wednesday The third river for you to fish in the National Park system is the Rio Carileufu.  This river is unique as it to harbors a respectable population of landlocked salmon.  It is primarily a rainbow fishery. Situated close to El Trebol & the Cholila valley this location allows you to fish a long day & return easily to El Trebol & another great Argentine dinner.

March 13 Thursday After breakfast today you will drive 2 hours to Estancia La Elvira.  This 60,000 acre ranch has 18 miles of the Rio Gualjaina flowing through it.   Esquel Outfitters is the only fishing operation with permission to fish this private property. It is your exclusive playground for the nest couple of days.

You will notice the geographic contrasts from the National Park located at the base of the Andes to the drier Patagonia steppe reminiscent of the Green River region in Wyoming.  The Rio Gualjaina is part spring creek and partly formed by a small tributary. .The insect hatches are good on this lovely river, and terrestrial fishing a blast. After a day on the river you will return to the estancia casco & dine in the main house.

March 14 Friday Estancia La Elvira is a stone’s throw from Argentina’s most famous spring creek of Arroyo Pescado. Today you will have an opportunity to fish this fun piece of water surrounded by Patagonian wildlife and abundant bird life including giant pink flamingoes.  A very unusual setting for fly fishing for sure! This creek is private access from another large neighboring estancia. You may fish the entire waterway for the day with either dry flies or nymphing. Upon returning to La Elvira this evening, you will enjoy an authentic Argentine asado (big time barbecue) with the specialty meat being fresh lamb.

March 15 Saturday Today you will walk wade new sections of the Rio Gualjaina from La Elvira. You may choose to enjoy the estancia from horseback and ride to the river or just sight see over this huge piece of property.  After fishing this day you will head to the town of Esquel/Trevelin about an hour and half drive. Esquel is a small town, influenced by the Welsh settlers. This will be the location of your last 2 nights of your lodging and your last day of fishing. Enjoy a night out on the town if desired.

March 16 Sunday On your final day of fishing in Patagonia you will float the only tailwater in the region. The Rio Grande offers a variety of fishing with much of it being with dry terrestrial imitations, especially grasshoppers.  You may sight fish to rising fish, strip streamers or nymph the riffles.  This river has it all including spectacular scenery.

March 17 Monday This morning you will have sometime to wander Esquel and buy gifts or personal items for your trip home. Your flight to Buenos Aires departs from Esquel at about 2:15 PM Upon your arrival to BA you will transfer to the International airport of Ezezia for your overnight flight home to the States.
