Green River Fishing Report

Green River, near Pinedale, WY
Water levels on the Upper Green have been fluctuating. The beginning of last week, flows were down to around 300cfs. At the end of the week we received a fair amount of rain and the river came up. Obviously river levels rose because of the rain, but also, it could be due to the less need of irrigation. The current flow at Warren Bridge is 388cfs. Fishing during the overcast, rainy times had been quite good but if you were caught in the mid-portion of the day filled with sunshine, it was a challenge. So if you are there on a bright sunny day, I recommend that you concentrate fishing in the mornings and evenings. PMDs and Tricos have been happening in the mornings. Fly patterns that imitate the emerger, adult, and spinner life-cycle forms of these insects can all be important to the fisherman. Typically, as the season wears on, insects will become smaller and that’s what is happening to the PMDs. I would stock them in sizes 18s and 20s. The Tricos have been their typical 18s through 22. In the evenings it has still been Caddis with Olive and Rusty Spinners thrown in just to keep things confusing.
In the last two weeks the grasshopper activity has boomed and has definitely helped out during the afternoon doldrums. We have also had good results using Cadillac Pheasant Tails and North Fork Specials as nymph droppers off of some kind of Chernobyl/Hopper pattern. The lead-headed Motor Oil is always a good streamer in the Pinedale area but as of late, it has been an extremely effective pattern. Somewhat of a new streamer, the Conehead Madonna in tan has also been working. This streamer also comes in yellow and I suggest that you give it a try this fall when the browns get active.
We have had good weather conditions pretty much all summer and light rain showers in August are a good thing and always welcomed. This extra moisture should go a long ways at enhancing the Green’s late season fishing.
Until next time good fishing,
Howard Cole
