Jackson Hole Fishing Report

August 14, 2003

Fishing has moved into full swing in the Jackson Hole area now that we have moved into July. While the Snake has been fair, the tributaries have been very good. A forest fire broke out on July 12 in the Snake River Canyon near East Table Campground closing the area to public use. Hopefully things will be under control soon and public access will be restored. Until then, fish the vast territory of the Snake and it's tributaries upstream of Hoback Junction.

Snake River

On the Snake River we have been using hoppers, large attractors, and streamers. The guides have been doing well using a variety of methods including twitching or dragging the fly. Currently, releases out of Jackson Lake Dam are at 3750 cfs which is still high. The water clarity has began to increase showing signs that runoff is almost completely over and fishing is getting better.

Snake River Tributaries

Anglers on the Hoback River and the Gros Ventre River have experienced excellent fishing with great hatches coming off in the evening. The variety of hatches includes various caddis, mayflies, and drakes. The fishing is great and the weather is predicted to be excellent for the next week. It is an exceptional time to be fishing these tributaries, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to fish these hatches.

We look forward to seeing you either in the shop or on the river.

Tight Lines and Good Luck Fishing,

Howard Cole
