Snake River Fishing
Report
The last month has been a little unsettled for the
Jackson Hole Valley. The end of June brought on two and a half weeks of
oppressive heat and then followed by a week and a half of much needed
rain. The rain has put the Snake and its tributaries off in color on a
daily to sometimes hourly basis. Which tributary got precipitation
determined where one would fish. The long range forecast calls for more
stable conditions which should get things back to a more normal setting.
This is the first time in the last 4 or 5 years that old timers remember
the way the Jackson Valley usually fished.
The
release at Jackson Lake Dam is 3480 CFS. This is a little
higher than what Bureau of Reclamation predicted last May for the Snake
in Wyoming. Maybe with the cooler temperatures and the moisture we have
been receiving, will relieve the irrigation demands for those Idaho
potatoes? Possibly dropping Snake River flows?
As
mentioned earlier, this being a more
normal year, the large attractor dry flies have started
working. The valleys staple, Turck’s Tarantula followed by Stimulators,
Parachute Madam X, and Chernobyl Ants have all come into play. One new
fly on the block that has been particularly good has been Trina’s Noble
Chernobyl
in red. Lite Bright Prince, Copper
John’s, Golden Tungstone, and Gold Bead
Billard Prince will all be very effective as
nymph droppers. Normally streamers are not fishing much this time of
year because dries are so effective. But the dependable Black Woolly
Buggers can be a good choice, especially when water is off-color. The
other staple of the valley, the JJ Special, is always the consummate
streamer. McCune’s Sculpin, Articulated Leech and Zonkers should also be
good producers.
Though
the consistent rainfall of recent weeks has challenged us with varying
fishing locations, come September we will look back on them as a
blessing. For those of you that are planning on coming out in later this
year you will definitely benefit.
Until next time...
