Green River Fishing Report
August 3, 2004
Green River, near Pinedale, WY
Fishing on the Upper Green has slowed. We got a bit of a surprise a few days ago when flows were suddenly cut by almost half, we assume due to irrigation demands. As I write this report, flows at Warren Bridge are 455cfs and floating is getting tough in anything but a raft.
We are also experiencing the Mid-Day Doldrums. This is very normal for Green in late July and early August. The bright, sunny middle part of the day has been a pretty tough go for us. When we have run into those rainy or overcast days, the fishing has held up well but as we get further into the summer, those days get to be far and few between. The mornings and evenings have still been fishing well with plenty of dry-fly action. We are still seeing a smattering of Gray Drakes, good numbers of PMD’s, spinner falls, Little Yellow Sallies, and in the evenings plenty of caddis. We are starting to get some action on hoppers, and when this becomes more consistent I think you’ll see fishing in the middle part of the day improve. Also when hopper fishing gets better, the hopper-nymph-dropper system should become more productive. We haven’t been picking up a lot of fish on streamers, but the one’s we have have been good ones.
All in all, it is just that time of year. So when we get through this middle of the day despondency, we are anticipating good things from the Green. For up to the minute information call the shop at (307) 733-7210.
Until next time,
Howard Cole
