Green River Fishing Report
July 21, 2004
Green River, near Pinedale, WY
The flows on the Upper Green have moderated considerably. As of today, July 15th they are 965cfs and as is typical, with the consistent flows, comes consistent fishing. It is fishing very well. We have been experiencing numerous hatches on the Green, but the most important one for us have been the Grey Drakes. Several Drake patterns that have been producing particularly well have been Hairwing’s, Extended-bodies, and Smith’s Grey Drake Emerger. Try them in a size 10 or 12. Don’t overlook the old stand-by Parachute Adams, in the same sizes. PMD’s and Little Yellow Sallies have also been about, and at times they have had their moments. Respectively, try Stalcup PMD Wingers, Don’s PMD, Pink Trudes, and Pink Cracklebacks. However, if there doesn’t seem to be a particular hatch going on, don’t be afraid to fish attractors like Tarantulas, Power Ants and you could even start looking at grasshoppers. Sometimes Green River fish can’t resist the temptation of a big dry-fly. Also, big attractor dries with a nymph dropper can be very effective. You don’t have to over think your nymph patterns, but two winners that are a little different have been Morrish’s Dirty Bird and the Gold Bead Queen Prince.
One fly you should always have in your box when fishing the Green is the JJ Special. The JJ’s will catch fish anywhere, but Upper Green River fish seem particularly partial to this fly. When other flies aren’t doing the trick, throwing a JJ’s always gives you the opportunity of catching the big one.
In early May we were expecting fishing on the Green to end early. This was due to a very mild spring. But with the moisture we received in late May and throughout June, we are now expecting the Upper Green to hold on well into August. Until next time,
