Jackson Hole Fishing Report

July 16, 2001

Snake River

As many of you may already know, about one week ago the Buffalo Fork, a major tributary of the Snake River, began receiving heavy rains. While the rain is very much needed and will be of long term benefit, it has had the unfortunate side effect of muddying up the Snake River from it's confluence with the Buffalo downstream throughout Jackson Hole rendering the Snake River all but unfishable.

I stopped by Wilson Bridge late this morning to check on the water clarity and found the water to be clear enough to fish, though far from optimal. Barring any more heavy rains in the Buffalo Fork drainage, I would expect the Snake to be in good shape as early as tomorrow morning. However, there have been scattered showers throughout the region today and the prospect of more rain is a definite possibility.

The good news is that when the Snake River does clear we can look forward to some good hopper fishing. Hoppers were the most abundant I've seen them this season, happily clacking away on the streambanks. Try Tarantulas, Jay-Dave's Hopper, and Parachute Hoppers, Club Sandwiches, and Parachute Madam X's once the water clears.

Water releases out of Jackson Lake Dam have been bumped up another 500 cfs in the past week, so between the additional releases and recent rain, flows have actually increased a bit from our last report, but not to a significant degree.

Snake River Tributaries

Hoback River

Fishing fairly well and, due it's fairly low water levels, should benefit from the recent rains. To find fish of any significant size you will need to find deeper water. Quarter mile long stretches of this river may not have a single holding lie big enough for larger trout, so keep moving until you find the deeper pools.

I, personally, would avoid the upper Hoback Canyon, and its dearth of larger holding pools, in favor of the lower Hoback which contains more and deeper water.

Gros Ventre

Fishing very well below Lower Slide Lake. The usual assortment of attractors will work well here, with caddis hatches being, perhaps, the most significant insect activity. As with all Jackson Hole streams, look for hoppers to increase in importance in the very near future.
