Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report

July 14, 2003

Lewis Lake

Lewis Lake in Yellowstone National Park has been red hot with excellent hatches of Callibaetis duns and spinners (size 14 & 16) as well as Mahogany spinners (size 14) and giant caddis (size 8). Ants and large beetles may also be present.

Look for brown trout cruising the shallows during these hatches. Try to determine the direction of travel and then lead the trout with your cast. Good patterns are Parachute Hare’s Ear, Parachute Adams, Thorax Callibaetis, Callibaetis spinners and so on.

Especially on calm days the trout can get very selective and you may need to experiment with different patterns to find what is working best. Long leaders (12-15’) and fine tippets (6x) are also helpful.

Yellowstone Lake

Yellowstone Lake is fishing well, as usual.  Not nearly as technical as Lewis Lake, Woolly Buggers and leeches are just about all you’ll need for the indigenous cutthroats. Strip them in with an erratic retrieve using frequent pauses. Brown, black, and olive in size 8 or 6 all will work well.

Yellowstone River

The Yellowstone River opens tomorrow, July 15. Expect big crowds and good fishing.
