Jackson Hole Fishing Report

July 11, 2000

Snake River
Since our last report the flows on the Snake River between Jackson Lake Dam and Palisades Reservoir have stabilized and we are well on our way to the large attractor fly fishing that makes the Snake in Jackson Hole so special.

For the wade fisherman look for the side channels that are holding a lot of water and fish them carefully. Don't spend too much time looking for actively rising fish but instead, fish the grassy banks and the seam water very thoroughly with Parachute Hopper Patterns and Red Chernobyl Ants. A long drift down the undercut banks in the slower water can make all the difference. Despite the early clearing, the water is still moving very quickly. Look for calmer sections of water and/or fish tight to the banks.

The drift boat fisherman with a strategy for the day will do well. Try streamers such as #8 Yellow and Brown JJ's Specials and Natural/Tan Double Bunnies in the morning before the weather warms up. In the middle of the day concentrate on the grassy banks and drop off riffles with searching patterns like Lime Trudes and Red Double Humpies. In the late afternoon and evening  try your favorite hopper pattern into every likely hold on the river.

Gros Ventre River
The Gros Ventre River is fishing very well. Get up to the "G.V." before the water levels get too low and the larger fish that have holed up in the river after spawning move out to the Snake. As is the rule with the Gros Ventre, fish the water. Move along the banks casting a Parachute Hopper or your favorite attractor pattern (right now my favorite is the H&L Variant in a size 12) into every likely piece of holding water. The fishing both above and below Lower Slide Lake has been excellent.

Hoback River
The Salmon Fly hatch is over on the Hoback but the big fish that followed these bugs up the river are still up there  and looking for feeding opportunities. Grasshoppers are invading the banks but are still fairly small. Try some #12 Joe's and Jay-Dave's Hoppers. Even a slight breeze will toss some naturals into the water and when this happens the fish can't resist. In the afternoon and evening look for Yellow Sallies with a #14 or larger Yellow Stimulator being my fly of choice. Under the surface Bead Head Prince Nymphs and Copper John's in small sizes (#18-#14) are also turning fish.
