Early season fishing on the Green River is
beginning to show signs of life and one gets the impression that things
are about to bust loose any day now. Already, the Green is having it’s
moments – it’s just that thus far it hasn’t been able to sustain them
for long periods of time.
Start the day on large dries like Stimulators and
Tarantulas. Once the Grey Drake hatch gets underway switch to a #10
Parachute Adams. Riffles are particularly productive while the Grey
Drakes are hatching. Yellow Sallies in size 12 and 10 are also very
abundant and Pale Morning Duns have been important at times. Nicer
weather has produced the best dry fly action.
On cloudy and/or cold days go with streamers like
the McCunes Sculpin, Gartside Soft Hackle Streamer (yellow is a good
color along with the standard black) and JJ Specials. Large trout have
been readily moving to streamers as long as the weather is nasty enough.
Don’t expect the action to last all day though.
Things have been quieting down dramatically around 2pm and, on some
days, a lot sooner. While the action doesn’t last all day it’s very good
when things are happening.
Until next time...
