Yellowstone National Park Fishing Report

June 25, 2004

The Park has come around nicely, with most water dropping and clearing. The Firehole is still fishing well. The Madison and Gibbon have been very reliable. Lewis Lake is seeing good action, and Yellowstone Lake is fishing the best it has in three years. The Lamar is the exception, still running high, but you should expect it to clear earlier than normal.

Look for PMD’s, Caddis, and Little Yellow Sallys on the Firehole and Madison. The Sallys have shown themselves with full force, and when this happens, they are remarkable trout food. So make sure you have some dry imitations to cover this random situation. As of yet the Salmonflies have not shown in any numbers in the Firehole Canyon, but if you are traveling that way I would at least take a peek. This hatch may just not materialize this year. For the Gibbon, on top - Wulff’s, Humpys, Trudes, and Elk Hair Caddis. On the bottom - Serendipities, Prince Nymphs, Hares Ears, Copper John’s, and for something a little different Bloody Marys. Though Yellowstone Lake is still not putting up numbers of fish as it did 5 or 6 years ago, we have been experiencing the best fishing that we’ve had in at least the last three years. And the fish are all big. Twenty to twenty-two inch fish are not uncommon. Canadian Blood, Canadian Brown, Black, and Olive Mohair Leeches fished in conjunction with a type III sinking line has been very successful. Concentrate off the points of the lake. Gull Point, Sand Point, and Bluff Point are just a few.

It will remain to be seen how the Yellowstone River between Fishing Bridge and Canyon will fish this year, but overall fishing in the Park has started well.

Good Fishing,
Howard Cole
