Yellowstone National Park
A day of fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park is the type of experience most anglers only dream of, but at High Country Flies we can make it a reality. The season opens Memorial Day weekend and it is this early summer season that finds us looking north to Yellowstone.
The surreal surroundings of the Firehole River provide the backdrop for the consistently best early season fly fishing in Yellowstone. Rainbows and browns provide the action while nymphs and dry flies provide the means. At a time when area fishing opportunities are pretty scarce it is fortuitous indeed that the Firehole, with its thermally warmed flows, offers excellent hatches, technical dry fly opportunities and, of course, the famous Yellowstone wildlife.
For those not willing to make the journey to the Firehole, Lewis and Yellowstone Lakes offer closer-to-Jackson opportunities for those willing to venture from the streams. In June, you often have no choice.
Yellowstone Lake is so prolifically populated with native Yellowstone cutthroat trout that even beginners have a great chance to land a few. It's just a matter of getting that cast out there a little ways.
Lewis Lake is not as populated, but still has plenty of browns and macinaw looking for a meal. Lewis Lake also has excellent dry fly fishing beginning around the first of July. Prior to that you'll usually be sinking and striping streamers.
There are too many fishing opportunities in Yellowstone to mention here, though those of us traveling from Jackson Hole are somewhat limited by driving times. Feel free to contact us for more information on other opportunities that may exist.
