Guided Fishing Trips in Wyoming -- May
The beginning of May is much like April, but with slightly better weather. Runoff on the Snake River in Jackson Hole will normally begin sometime within the first week or two of May, after which the Snake becomes unfishable until June, July or August.
Once runoff has begun, fishing possibilities become limited, though not nonexistent. The Green River and Duck Creek, both one hour south of Jackson, can provide fishable water and good opportunities. Snake River tributaries north of the Hoback River open on May 21, but commercially guided fishing trips are not allowed. Other than that though, one needs to wait for the Yellowstone National Park general opener on Memorial Day weekend.
The real action in southern Yellowstone (which is the only section you can realistically expect to fish in a day trip from Jackson) starts with the Lewis Lake ice-off. If the ice is already gone by the Memorial Day weekend, look for good action right off the bat. In some years however the ice won't melt until the first week or so in June. Lewis Lake is an excellent early season option with an abundant population of browns, mackinaw, and some brookies.
The Firehole River near Old Faithful can have great early season hatches with accompanying dry fly action, but it is a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive from Jackson. But if you've really got the urge, and we often do that time of year, the trip can be well worth your time. The Firehole is one of the most beautiful and surreal settings you'll ever find for trout fishing.
To sum it up, the Jackson Hole locals are still fishing the Snake River in early May prior to runoff, and at times, the fishing can be quite good. Otherwise, Yellowstone provides the next reliable fishing on its Memorial Day weekend (the actual dates of which vary from year to year) opener.
